Here’s an excerpt from Ann’s old online dating profile:

Do you remember in grade school when you returned from summer vacation and one teacher always asked everyone to write an essay on what they did during their vacations? Filling this out feels pretty much the same as that – I have nothing spectacular to report but I know I have had fun.

Though Ann rambles a bit, it’s a sweet and creative way to express how happy she is. One thing I’ve learned from being in advertising for 20 years is: don’t change a good thing. This was good. All I did was edit it a bit.

Her dating profile then briefly summed up a few activities, all of which were fairly common.

When she filled out the quiz however, she said 2 things in particular that I knew I could twist in a compelling way: 1) she loves short stories, preferably mysteries 2) her friends tease her about how she can read for hours no matter how busy her life gets.

AFTER

I began Ann’s new online dating profile like this:

I just spent two days trying to catch a killer. It’s a good thing I love reading short mysteries more than novels; otherwise I’d never get anything done.

I ended her dating profile on her own happy note:

Every fall, our grade school teacher asked the class to write an essay about our summer break. I never had anything spectacular to report but I knew it had been fun. As I write this profile, I can sum my life up the same way.

Though I only made a few revisions, her new online dating profile ended up easier to read and allowed her true self to shine through. She was right – she didn’t have spectacular events to report. She had better – her warm, happy, unique personality. The hits started coming.
